Conifer-based Polypore

The Conifer-based Polypore, Heterobasidion annosum, (Polyporaceae, Aphyllophorales) has a hard, brownish, furrowed, stalkless cap with white to yellowish pores.   The cap generally measures 1-10" wide and is flat with a wavy margin, often protruding from a spreading, crustlike mass that is off-white, gray-brown, or dark brown, and tinged red to blackish as they age.   The spores measure 3.5-5x3-4 microns and are are elliptical to almost round with very fine spines, and are white in color.   The Conifer-based Polypore is not known to be harmful for human comsumption, but is characteristcally tough and would make eating a chore.   In the "Polypore" family, none of the Ploypores are known to be harmful, though some that are fleshy enough to eat have been known to cause indigestion.   This species of mushroom is extremely agressive to conifers and can cause serious damage to them, hence the name "Conifer-based".
